A Canadian man named Craig Campbell was taking a familiar hike near Calgary with his 10‑year‑old Doberman, Night, when suddenly a grizzly sow and her cubs emerged from the brush. Although Campbell had bear spray, he realized he wouldn’t be able to deploy it in time.
In that tense moment, Night sprang forward and positioned himself between his owner and the bear. His bold act bought Campbell just enough time; the bear eventually retreated back to her cubs. Campbell credits Night’s training—he has long practiced Schutzhund, a working‑dog sport—for the dog’s composure under threat.
As a result of his bravery, Night was awarded the 2025 “Dog of the Year” honor by Purina’s Animal Hall of Fame in Canada. The accolade includes a medallion, a ceremony in Toronto, and a year’s supply of pet food.
