A local Las Vegas valley middle school is making a big difference.
Hyde Park Middle School donated thousands of dollars to help the California wildfire victims.
Natalie Fragiadakis, a Hyde Park Middle School English teacher, came up with the idea to raise money after seeing devastating images of the Palisades and Eaton wildfires on the news.
Fragiadakis' goal was to raise $1,000 for victims. Children were asked to donate during their lunch period if they wanted and were able to.
Assistant principal, Adam Taylor said, "Those that gave, she just thanked them and those that didn't, she said I appreciate you stopping by anyways. So, there was never any animosity towards the kids."
The school ended up raising and donated $9138.84 to the California Fire Fund to help the first responders and victims who lost their homes.
One student, Trystan Espino, won a $100 Kinross Nevada Gold Star Award scholarship for her good grades. Espino said she was happy to donate her prize for her favorite teacher.
Fragiadakis was moved by her students who donated and said, "I just want people to understand that this generation of kids, they’re incredible humans, and it’s important to show up for people, and it’s important to be kind because it costs us nothing to be kind and we need way more of that.”
