SSOTD: Las Vegas to build transitional housing campus to help the homeless

The City of Las Vegas has announced their plans to build a $200 million transitional campus, in an effort to tackle the growing homelessness crisis in the valley.

Campus for Hope will take people who are unhoused and get them into transitional housing. After 4-6 months, they will transition to supportive housing, with the long term goal being permanent housing.

The campus will offer case management to identify individual needs, such as childcare and medical services to help residents get back on their feet.

Campus for Hope is modeled after a similar project in San Antonio, Texas, which achieved a 77% reduction in homelessness since 2010.

"We've seen what happens in other cities when the unsheltered problem is not addressed or not managed by municipal governments," said Virginia Valentine, President and CEO of the Nevada Resorts Association. "So we saw this as a space where we could do something positive to reduce the number of people living unsheltered."

The campus will be constructed at Charleston and Jones, and is expected to open by 2027.
