David Clarke, a young man from Liverpool, turned his grief into generosity and decided to use his mother's inheritance to help his city become a better place. After losing his mother in a cycling accident, David Clarke was devasted. His mother left him with a $125,000 inheritance but also left him with a sense of civic responsibility and duty.
David Clarke describes his mom as having a huge social conscience and wanted to know more about how the world worked. He explains that a lot of his moral framework comes from her.
Honoring her values, David sought guidance from his neighbors, writing to 600 people in his L8 postal code to ask their opinion on the best way to use the money. From the 38 responses he received, a committee was formed that nominated four different Liverpool charities that would receive a quarter of the inheritance.
Two charities that received donations from David's selfless gesture is Team Oasis, as well as Liverpool Kids Plate to Plate. Team Oasis is a charity that provides meals and activities to the families based in Liverpool's underprivileged areas. The charity director explained this gesture as "such a blessing" as some of the money used from Clarke's donation helped families experience RV holidays that may have never experienced one. The other organization, Liverpool Plate to Plate teaches children in urban neighborhoods how to grow and prepare their own food.
