SSOTD: UNLV Students Find Healing Through Origami Project

As today marks the one year anniversary of the University of Nevada-Las Vegas mass shooting, a remembrance ceremony will be held today in honor of the three victims.

At the remembrance, a student-led project almost a year in the making will be on display for the first time.

The "Cranes for UNLV" project began as a small initiative following the tragedy on December 6, 2023, drawing inspiration from the Japanese tradition of origami cranes, which symbolize unity, healing and peace.

What started off as a group of eight students, has turned in an international project involving 4,000 origami cranes. "It just evoled naturally," shared Rin Ruby, a graduate student at UNLV. "The amount of people involved just continued to grow and grow until we've reached the scale that we are at now."

More than 200 people particpated in the project, including a former UNLV professor from Japan who sent cranes by mail.

The project will have a permanent home in the courtyard of Beam Hall, displayed in four frames each containing 1,000 cranes. The red cranes will spell out "UNLV."

"We hope that this memorial will not only commemorate and honor the lives of our fallen Professors, but also serve as an embodiment of the unity and resilience of our #unlvstrong community," said student Kylee Brahma.

The remembrance ceremony will be held today at 11am in the Alumni Amphitheater.
