The City of Las Vegas microchip ordinance is now active. It requires all owners of dogs and cats over the age of 4 months to microchip their pets.
Owners also have to register their pets with a microchip registration company and with the Animal Protection Services through the animal pet licensing program.
The city's animal control officers will now scan pets they see at any calls they go to to check for pets who do not have a microchip.
If your pet is found not microchipped, you could face a penalty. The worst penalty is an arrest and misdemeanor charge, which could result in up to 6 months jail time and a $1,000 fine.
Additionally, under this ordinance, all shelters and breeders will be required to microchip pets before putting them up for adoption.
The ordinance does not apply to an animal whose owner has lived within the city for less than 30 days or an animal brought into the city temporarily for a show or exhibition.
For now, the city pans to educate people on the ordinance, and will only cite or arrest if necessary.
The microchip itself is a one-time charge. Various animal facilities across the valley are hosting microchipping events.
The Animal Foundation and the Nevada SPCA are offering microchip services around $25 - $75.
The Nevada SPCA is also hosting a free microchip event the Silverado Ranch Community Center at 9855 Gilespie Street on Saturday, September 14 from 8 a.m. - 12 p.m. They are offering free microchipping and rabies shots on a first come, first serve basis.
