Three local schools have been awarded the Purple Star School designation by the Nevada Department of Education.

The designation has been given to Legacy Traditional School in Henderson, Sheila Tar Academy of International Studies in Las Vegas, and Somerset Academy in North Las Vegas.

Schools that receive this award have shown their commitment to supporting military students and their families. Because of how often these students move, it can cause emotional, social and academic obstacles. According to the department, this issue affects nearly 11,000 students in Nevada.

"Military-connected students move schools on average between six to eight times during their school-aged years. These Purple Star Schools affirm Nevada's unwavering commitment to supporting military-connected students and families," said the State Superintendent of Public Instruction, Jhone Elbert. "I'm thrilled Nevada's schools continue to step up to support our military service members and their families."

Shannon Manning, Principal at Somerset Academy says receiving this award is a tremendous honor. "We recognize and honor the sacrifices made by our families, and this award is an affirmation of our commitment to them."

The newly designated Purple Star Schools will be recognized on the education department's website, and will be highlighted at military installations across Nevada.
