A Congressional Gold Medal will be awarded to members of an all-black women Army Corps unit for their service during WWII. Lena D. Kings is one of five members of the 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion ("Six Triple Eight") who is still alive and well. On Saturday, June 4, King was awarded the Six Triple Eight Congressional Gold Medal Act. This award was given to her for the role she played as one of the 850 women who were tasked with clearing a three-year mail backlog during WWII. Despite being discriminated against and having close encounters with the Nazis, Six Triple Eight completed their task a year before their deadline. Their hard work, dedication, and sacrifice allowed other service members to communicate with their loved ones, adding a smile to the service members day. At the event, actor Tyler Perry announced plans to make a movie about King's service to give the world the opportunity to see her inspiring story.
