Q: If you were talking to yourself on the first day you started your career, what would be the piece of advice you would give yourself on that first day?
A: Ask for what you truly want! I walked into the YMCA 24 years ago as a volunteer. After serving our community for several months I asked my supervisor how much experience I need in order to be hired, she said “I would have hired you the day you walked in but you said you wanted to volunteer.” That was a great lesson – ask for what you want!
Q: What is a quote or saying you live by, and why?
A: "Comparison is the thief of joy – Theodore Roosevelt” We spend far too much time comparing ourselves to others on social media, our peers at work, neighbors, family members, etc. That fact is, there is no one who compares to me because I am uniquely and wonderfully me. If only we can focus our attention inward our light will shine outward and that is where true joy lives.
Q: How do you “shine” in your career/field in a unique market like Las Vegas?
A: Nurturing the potential of staff, volunteers, and others is how I “shine” at the YMCA and in the Las Vegas community. I am so incredibly blessed to lead nearly 600 shining stars and am hopeful that my contributions spark a flame for service and commitment to developing others.
