It's summertime and we want to remind you that sun protection is important! Jillian Farres is a volunteer from the Nevada Cancer Coalition and is this month's Vegas Stronger Champion! The Nevada Cancer Coalition is a non-profit whose goal is to raise awareness about the importance of screenings, help navigate through cancer care when diagnosed, and overall fight against cancer!
Jillian Farres explains the importance of why she volunteers, "It is near and dear to my heart, I lost my best friend [Peggy] to breast cancer; she was 36 years old. Nobody thinks that at 36 you're going to die, and that you're going to lose your life to breast cancer." She explains that volunteering allows her to set an example for her children on the importance of giving back to your community. She feels that her community is under-served, and many more volunteers are necessary to spread the message!
The Nevada Cancer Coalition will host a free skin check clinic at the Durango Hills YMCA on Monday, Aug.11 2025 from 5:00 PM - 8:00 PM. They will work with doctors from Thomas Dermatology as well as volunteer UNLV Medical Students. Kayla Ramsey from the Nevada Cancer Coalition explains that this event is completely free, non-insurance required and will go off a first-come first-serve basis. They will check all sun-exposed areas for any signs of cancer and will help their guests navigate them through that process if something if found.
Jillian Farres was recognized by Jeff Giles of Findlay Automotive Group for her volunteer efforts by surprising her with a check for $599! According to Giles, she was recognized as a volunteer because the Nevada Cancer Coalition recognized her as a top volunteer within her efforts of spreading the dangers and awareness of skin cancer in Las Vegas!
