Christmas season is still far away, but Nevadans across the valley are already prepping for the holidays!

During this upcoming holiday season, a tree from the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest in Nye County will adorn the lawn at the U.S Capitol for Christmas, but it's not just our tree going to Washington, it's Nevada's ornaments too!

The U.S Forest Service said more than 10,000 handcrafted ornaments are needed to decorate and they need your help! Ornaments not used on the Capitol Christmas Tree will be used for indoor trees in Washington D.C.

The ornaments adorning the Capitol Christmas Tree need to be brightly colored and about 9-12 inches in size. Ornaments must also be weather-proof, being able to withstand wind, rain, and snow. There is also an option to create ornaments 4-10 inches in size and don't need to be weatherproof.

Some ideas from Humboldt-Toiyabe to rep the silver state include:

  • Uniquely Nevada, capture the spirit of "Home Means Nevada"
  • Iconic landscapes and special places in Nevada
  • Multiple use and how Nevadans enjoy their public lands
  • The wild plants, animals, and geology of Nevada.

  • Smokey Bear and Woodsy Owl

Before community members start getting crafty, the Forest Service puts light to be aware of creating ornaments not made from natural, recyclable, no sharp objects, no commercial logos, cannot be divisive or offensive.

Ornaments cannot be returned. The deadline to submit is September 15th, 2025!

Those interested in sending ornaments can drop off or mail them to Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest Offices!
