SSOTD: Young Girl Nearly Scar Free After Receiving Unique Burn Treatment

A young girl out of Logandale has recovered from severe burns after being treated with a unique new method.

Astyn was at a backyard BBQ with her family when the accident happened. "My dad turned on the grill to grill some chicken I think," Astyn recalls. "Once he turned it on it blew him back and I was pinned between two pillars."

Suffering from burns all over her body, Astyn was flown to UMC in Las Vegas, one of the only hospitals in the region that offers a burn treatment called RECELL.

RECELL uses the patient's own skin to create spray-on cells, speeding up recovery and helping with the appearance of scars.

Burn surgeon, Dr. Syed Saquib explains, "You have a superficial layer of skin, you put it in a device and the device has multiple enzymes, you put it in a syringe and spray it back on the patient."

Most of Astyn's burns were second degree, with some third degree burns on her face and parts of her body. After being treated with RECELL, she's nearly scar free. "She was discharged from the hospital 12 days after being admitted which is huge considering the magnitude of her burns," said Dr. Saquib.

Soon, others like Astyn will be able to receive this treatment. The company behind RECELL, Avita Medical recently announced the FDA has approved RECELL for treatment of Full-Thickness Skin Defects.
