The Southern Nevada Health District will begin offering free lead testing for consumer products beginning April 6.
Testing will be available the first Monday of each month from 7:30 to 9:30am. No appointment is required.
"Lead exposure is preventable, but it often comes from everyday items people don't realize may be hazardous," said Dr. Cassius Lockett, district health officer for SNHD. "By offering free, accessible testing, we are giving residents the tools they need to identify potential risks in their homes and take steps to protect themselves and their families, especially young children who are most vulnerable to the harmful effects of lead."
Health officials said items important to test include painted pottery used for for food or beverages, such as toys and cups frequently handled by young children. Other items include house keys or imported goods.
The district recently tested pottery from local retailers and found lead in items such as bowls and mugs. After being informed, the retailers removed the products.
The SNHD building is located at 280 S. Decatur Blvd. near Veterans Memorial Highway.
