Volunteers, survivors and community members will come together for the American Heart Association Lobby Day to meet with their legislators and take part in making Nevada a healthier and safer place to live. Cardiovascular diseases and stroke are the nation’s and Nevada’s No. 1 and No. 5 killers. They claim more than 840,000 American lives each year — nearly 7,000 of which are Nevada lives. For more than 30 years, the American Heart Association’s You’re the Cure Grassroots Advocacy Network has called upon volunteers to deliver lifesaving messages to their elected officials. Lawmakers respond to constituents who speak up about issues affecting our communities. Together, You’re the Cure advocates have succeeded in creating smoke-free communities, placing Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) in public places, securing funding for medical research and supporting policy change. The American Heart Association's legislative advocacy efforts move us closer to our goal of improving the cardiovascular health of all Americans by 20 percent, while reducing death from cardiovascular diseases and stroke by 20 percent by 2020.
