A Long Island family is morning the loss of Diane Aluska, 55, after an out of control vehicle struck her and her daughter Jenna (16) on Mother's Day. Before the vehicle hit them, Diane pushed her daughter out of the way, and while her daughter did sustain injuries, her mother's final act likely saved her life.
“There is no doubt she saved her daughter’s life,” Suffolk County police Detective Sgt. James Murphy said of Diane Aluska.
The driver of the vehicle that struck the pair was 80 year-old, Ann Riolo, who was backing out of a diagonal parking space when she mistakenly believed she had put the car into drive before accelerating backwards, jumping the curb, and striking Diane and Jenna. Because this appears to be just a tragic accident, police say charges are unlikely.
