Like most people I love to travel, especially on the west coast. Now that I live in Las Vegas I can get to about anywhere on this side of the country within reason. I was told to go to the Spirit Airlines check in desk at McCarran airport and just ask about penny fares. I did the wednesday before and got a $120 round trip flight so I took it! That's the not cheapest I've heard of but it worked for me. (August seems a bit more pricey to travel for some reason.) I have found some decent fares via Expedia around the west coast, though.
I have a few friends in San Diego but also wanted to do some sight seeing of my own from Coronado Island to Belmont Park and La Jolla! I found a car rental through expedia for $80 total and $100 for a night at beautiful private residence in Point Loma, which I had no idea was a beautiful community. A room and private bathroom with a gated home -- It was nice! I like to encourage anyone to travel because you can do it on a budget without spending a lot nowadays with penny fares, expedia and Airbnb.
Hotels can sometimes be a good option in certain cases BUT Airbnb is a personal touch that helps actual home owners financially and you meed some good people in the process. It's like paying to stay at a home away from home.
