Jennifer + Pup-I

Jennifer never imagined that adopting another dog would change her life. Thanks to Pup-i, she has a new career and a new purpose.

"I felt fortunate to have two adventurous rescue dogs that love to travel, camp, kayak, paddle board and hike with me. I never even considered adding another furry family member, until about three months into working as an Adoption Counselor at The Animal Foundation. Early in June 2018, I met a scared puppy that was hiding under his bed at the shelter. I sat down in the kennel and after a few moments, he climbed onto my lap and up my chest and nuzzled into my neck. I carried him around the adoption area and fell in love with him."

"Pup-i was found injured at a park, with an eye that needed to be removed. Little did I know that the meeting, and subsequent adoption of the little one-eyed dog, would change my life. Pup-i was the missing link in our family. He joined me and his new sisters on our adventures, ranging from short day trips to overnight trips, kayaking six days on the lower section of the Colorado River, to kayaking through stunning canyons on Lake Powell."

"One afternoon, I spoke to the veterinarian who removed my Pup-i’s eye. As we chatted about the differences in working in a private clinic versus in a shelter environment, I asked her about the damaged eye Pup-i came in with. Once Pup-i’s surgery was complete, he went into a foster home to recover. Not only was I grateful to the veterinary services team for taking such good care of Pup-i, I also started to understand the importance and need for fosters."

"So to start giving back and doing more, I began to foster animals. My first was a cute and spunky pup. Next, I started fostering kittens. The most amazing part of having the kittens in our home was seeing how much Pup-i loved them! He would allow them to try to nurse on him, play with them, snuggle them and constantly mother them. I enjoy fostering, but still felt there was much more to do. The more I spoke to the veterinarian who treated Pup-i, the more it sparked my interest in the medical side of The Animal Foundation. Inspired by the treatment Pup-i received from the veterinary services team at the shelter, I decided to pursue a new career path. I recently started my new position as a Veterinary Assistant at The Animal Foundation, and will soon be going back to school to work on my Veterinary Technician degree."

"I feel so fortunate to be able to change careers later in life, to make an impact in the lives of so many more animals, and to continue to grow in the veterinary services field. Pup-i not only enhances my life, the lives of his sisters and his foster siblings, his presence in my life has led me continue to foster animals in need, and it has taken me to a new path and purpose."

Each year, the Petco Foundation invites adopters to share the story of how their adopted pet changed their lives during the annual Holiday Wishes campaign, giving the organization that they adopted from a chance to receive a grant award. This story by Jennifer won The Animal Foundation in Las Vegas, Nevada a 2019 Holiday Wishes award.
